The reason why people still believe in psychic readings

In my opinion, I believe it is because people, in general, crave certainty and are uncomfortable with ambiguity. People would rather attempt to obtain a concrete answer to a question, rather than face the unknown.

The following is often quoted, but it is still good:

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”    -Rainer Maria Rilke
As i know that if you find an extremely gifted psychic, which I have found are extremely rare, then you will know.

The best one I ever knew told you only that which you would find helpful for your spiritual growth (or personal growth - it matters not what you call it). She also did profound healings, receiving sincere letters of thanks, including one for a woman's daughter who seemed beyond help for her severe mental disturbance - if I recall, it was severe schizophrenia or severe autism - something one would ordinarily put well outside the realm of any kind of significant progress within an hour, yet when the mother got home from the reading/healing, she found her daughter significantly improved.

This psychic was also in a room of other psychics who had been gathered together to see if any had advice to offer the police detective who had come to a dead end in his murder investigation. None of the others  were able to assist, however this gifted psychic about whom I wrote above, saw the murdered woman's soul in the room when the cops consulted the psychics. The psychic understood that that the murdered woman's friend knew more than she revealed to the detective.  The psychic told this to the detective, who interrogated the friend a second time. Based on this second interrogation, a murder suspect was arrested, the case brought to trial, and the suspect was convicted.

I knew another psychic whom I saw give a reading to someone and talked non-stop, as though she were reading an encyclopedia of the person's life. Interesting, but not really helpful. However, that psychic too, could be extraordinarily helpful. I learned from a person who, in her reading, asked about her mother's upcoming exploratory abdominal surgery. The psychic told her that the surgeon who was going to operate was not the family doctor, as the mother had been informed, but someone else who needed the practice. The daughter told this to her mom. Her mom told her doctor what she knew. She got back to her daughter with the news that her doctor turned white as a ghost when she confronted him with the knowledge.

During the same reading, the psychic also told the daughter that her mom's ailment did not require surgery, but that if she drank wheat grass juice and ate some kind of limited diet (I don't recall now what it was), she would get well. The information was conveyed to the mother and yes, she got well in two weeks.

The question is not whether a reality exists which is beyond our five senses and which can be accessed to assist people in their personal growth, but whether you are in fact accessing it, or merely listening to the product of  someone's desires, or fears, or creativity, intended or unintended. If you are able to attend a class that is taught by someone who not only is deeply gifted and free of bias in their psychic offering, but operates from his or her heart, you will hear many accounts such as the above, from ordinary people who have nothing to gain by lying, but are very interested in discovering that the psychic realm is quite real, and they simply want to use it in their lives for their own growth and healing and/or that of others.
